Choosing the right wedding music can be a tricky decision. Whether you go for a DJ, live band/musicians or a playlist on your own device, each option has its benefits and things to consider. When it comes down to it, what matters is your personal preference and what works best for your needs and budget.
Below, I’ve outlined the three most popular options along with what I believe are the positives and things you’ll want to consider for each:
LIVE BAND/MUSICIANS
Positives
Bring the energy of a live performance to your event
Create an extra special touch for your guests
Is a unique option
Considerations
Often the most expensive option, especially if you’re hiring for the entire evening
Usually have specific requirements for space and facilities (particularly when it comes to outdoor events)
Require additional management of logistics
DJ
Positives
Is able to create an interactive atmosphere
Likely to keep the dance floor full all night long
Has a wide range of music options & can mix in the moment to keep the party going
May be willing to MC the event - gives you one less thing to worry about
Considerations
Usually have specific requirements for space and facilities (particularly when it comes to outdoor events)
More expensive than doing it yourself
Require additional management of logistics
PLAYLIST (DIY)
Positives
Can be free or a much lower cost than hiring entertainment
Great for creating an intimate atmosphere and can be tailored to fit any occasion and music taste
May require less coordination and management leading up to the day
Considerations
May need someone to check on or operate the music - this often ends up being a wedding guest or wedding party member
All responsibility for ambience and music falls on the person making the playlist or acting as the MC which can impact the flow and feel of the event
Check out some of my curated Spotify playlists here:
Getting Ready - for a laidback, romantic morning
Pre-Ceremony - for the 30 minutes before, softens as it gets closer to the ceremony start
Chill reception background - great for dinner
Upbeat background - for before the ceremony or cocktail hour/reception
Wedding Dance Playlist - a bunch of bangers!
Exit - fun songs to tell everyone the party's over
No matter which option you choose, it's important to make sure that it fits your needs and what you envision for your big day. With careful consideration of each option, you'll be able to make the best choice for your wedding musical entertainment!
